Art of Nudity without Nudity Part 1 - Shadows

Writer's picture: Jeff BennionJeff Bennion

Photography literally means "to write with light." As an artist, it is important to control the visual flow of an image. I want to control how where the eye comes into an image and how the viewer flows through the image. That is why when I am shooting nudity, I prefer to cover up the nude bits. My preferred method of doing this is with shadows and posing to get precise light angles and the body to pull out the curves and contours, but still leave a lot to the imagination.

Precise Shadow Placement

Here, we use a variety of devices to shape the light so that it only hits in certain areas to prevent the light from creeping around and illuminating whatever part you are trying to hide.

Backlighting

By putting the light behind you, we can carve out the silhouette and emphasize the curves and contours of the body.
