Getting Moody Boudoir Shots with Candles and Fog

Updated: 1 day ago

My two favorite elements to add moodiness to an image are candles and fog. Here's how I create my images with these awesome tools.

Candles

Candles create a warm natural glow that you cannot replicate with fake lights. We use real candles with real fire. The color toning from flickering candles is very warm and soft. Candles also just create such an awesome mood in each shoot.

Fog

Fog is great for adding an ethereal look to images. They add a softness to the atmosphere and help refract light, adding a soft glow to the air. I like to use fog when shooting with colored lights because it helps pick up the color in the air. I like to use fog with high-intensity spotlights to show the effect of light beams in the air.

A lot of what I know about using fog, I learned from working on music videos in the special effects production crew for artists such as Megan Thee Stallion, Panic at the Disco, and Justin Timberlake. In 2024, I had the opportunity to work on this music video handling the fog and fake blood for the vampire scene we shot in a crypt in Los Angeles:
